Twas the season...

FIRST OFF...My blogspot software was giving me fits today, so I apologize that the formatting isn't wonderful...but it is what it is!

As I begin to prepare for "the season to be jolly," I chuckled as the thought popped into my head (like a vision of sugarplums) that the holidays are coming right on the heels of "the season to be jogging." I wasn't literally doing marathons or anything--no turkey trot for me. I was, however, running all over the place the past couple of months. I'll keep it brief, but I wanted to update you on the goings on.

September began with a meeting in Brighton, Michigan, to hand off items from the previous National Day of Prayer State Coordinator, Sylvia, to the new one...me! Also a great time of fellowship with our Midwest National Area Leader, Sue Stoltz.

Next it was off to South Dakota where I spoke four times. I so enjoyed my time there with all the ladies, and the lovely and sweet Doretha Fields took me to see Mount Rushmore.

It was from the "Mitten" to the "Boot" as I traveled from Michigan to Louisiana for a sectional ladies meeting in Leesville, then a ladies conference in Jonesville, followed by two Sunday services at the awesome Wallace Ridge Church, also in Jonesville. It was a treat to be with Sis. Vesta Mangun, and while I was in the South, I enjoyed a ride on an alligator and some catfish and hushpuppies at Jim Bowies. Mmmm. A taste of home...

Which brings me to the next trip! Paducah! I always love an excuse to travel to my home town, and was happy to be with the Romains for a two-day ladies conference....and also to see my "hometown" kinfolk. Friday night we shared Quilting Patches of Life, and on Saturday we had fun with Purse-onality.

In between all the conferences, I got a wild hair. I'm not sure if it was brown, grey or black--they are all co-habitating on my head in this season of life. But I listened to that wild hair (and got my husband's blessing) and decided to use my frequent flyer miles to dash in to St. Louis for one day. I had two print runs that came in right before General Conference, and I was excited to see them, get some inventory and get the pre-orders sent out.

Then it was off to General Conference in Louisville. There is nothing like thousands of people getting together to worship God....and I do love being in the displays and meeting people, as well. It's an honor to be the guest of PPH to meet and greet so many nice people who purchase my books through their distribution channels. Love all my PPH partners and friends!

Following General Conference was my first trip to Connecticut at the invitation of Ruth Harvey. What a wonderful weekend at the Polished Cornerstones conference. I love speaking to teens and twenties... encouraging them to to live this wonderful life unto the Lord with excellence and joy. And, as always, it was a pleasure to be with Debbie Velie of New Beginnings Adoption and Family Services. Sunday morning was great at Life Church!

The following weekend I spoke at Indiana Ladies Retreat. Oh, I love those ladies in Indiana! I wished I could have stayed for the entire event, but after I shared a message, One Woman, on Friday, I had to fly off to Colorado Springs early the next morning.

In Colorado, I caught the last part of the annual National Day of Prayer Conference. (Don't tell anyone I wore the same jacket and scarf.) It was important that I get to the conference, because I was commissioned as the new State Coordinator for Michigan. I was very blessed to share a dinner table with Mrs. Dobson, who is a warm and wonderful person. The picture below is me signing the map for Michigan at the conference.

And then, bonus day! Since I couldn't get home on Sunday evening, I shot over to Landmark Tabernacle in Denver for Sunday evening service and a lovely visit with the Hales. It was a great ending to an extremely busy two months.

The beginning of November I volunteered at a huge prayer meeting in Ford Field--I read over 30,000 attended. I worked at the entrances checking people in and passing out programs, but also spent many hours in prayer at this phenomenal 24-hour prayer event.

Now I'm home. Honestly, it took some time to recover, because in between all that traveling I was preparing presentations, filling orders, taking care of my family, ministering at church, and all the stuff life entails. But it's a good life. I'll rest in heaven, I think.

Well, that's certainly enough for now. I have to get my Thanksgiving newsletter out today. Blessings to you and those you love as you begin a blessed holiday season!

The J-J Months

June and July...they are different sorts of months...right in the middle of sometimes crazy and sometimes lazy summer days. I was blessed to go to Mackinac Island with my daughter's class the first few days of June. It was a lovely trip that included a ferry ride to the island, tour of a deer park, two fort tours, a buggy tour of the island, shopping and a trip through the Soo Locks.

After a family reunion in Kentucky, my family (minus the two that don't live at home) took a detour and visited the Creation Museum. The Planetarium show was everyone's favorite, except for me. I get motion sickness, so I just relaxed in the chairs and listened. But the displays were great, including the gardens and petting zoo.

Also in June, I rented a cabin on the campground where my daughter was attending church camp. It was a great opportunity to be near her and watch her from afar at times. She sang in a group and with the choir in evening service, and I popped in each night to listen. I also had a lot of free time that I put to good use in prayer, reading and giving a new book a final edit.

I'm really excited about "Insight on Ministry from a Christmas Tree Farm," and was so thankful for this alone time to finish the manuscript. Before I left home for the campground I had set up an appointment at Gusty Farms, a Christmas Tree farm nearby. I toured the grounds and asked the Lord to speak to me from what I saw, and He did! I received the end of the book, and I can't wait to share it with you...hopefully in October.

Mid July I had a fantasticalistic time with the girls at First Apostolic Church in Toledo. We did two teaching sessions on "The Girl in the Dress" with a lunch break in between. I love the looks on their faces when I present this very practical teaching on modesty. Hey...we've got to be real and we've got to be relevant. If not, I might as well stay home and scrapbook.

The last weekend of the month, I was happy to attend the Michigan District Ladies Retreat. So nice to just marinate in the presence of the Lord and hear the good Word of the Lord from the speakers. Of course hanging with all my girlfriends was a big bonus, and I did have Affirming Faith resources available in a display area.

There's much more, but those are the highlights of the J-J Months. One day left and we're in to August and the beginning of a new school year and a relatively calm travel month to prepare for a heavy Fall conference schedule. I hope I will connect with some of you at the events listed in the column at right.

Also in July, I was asked to fill the position of the Michigan State Coordinator for the National Day of Prayer. After prayer and consulting with my husband and pastor, I agreed to accept the position. The transition has been made, but there's a lot still to put into motion. I look forward to being at the annual Leadership Summit in Colorado Springs in October for an official commissioning service with Mrs. Shirley Dobson.

Wow! Spring has come and is going soon. My husband always says, "Where did the time go?" Well, Spring has been a whirlwind of activities. Here are some highlights:

March 26 I was blessed to speak at a ladies sectional meeting at the Solid Rock church in Ann Arbor on "Quilting Patches of Life." The response was wonderful...as well as the luncheon and fellowship following!

In April I spoke at Van Hoosen Middle School in Rochester Hills, Michigan, and a ladies event in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, on "Building a City of Refuge." The serious Friday session (served up with a smile) was balanced by the fun "Walking in L.O.V.E." presentation at a lovely brunch banquet on Saturday.

Sunday morning, after speaking in the youth class, I enjoyed morning worship with the congregation and gave a brief testimony in service. The southern hospitality was wonderful and much appreciated, along with a great reception by the church members and their guests.

Saturday, April 23, Pat and Rick David, proprietors of the Murphy House Bed & Breakfast, hosted the official book release party for The Rose of Sharon, my first full-length historical fiction. Many ladies previewed their Easter bonnets at the fine china reception and enjoyed readings from the book.

The response has been very positive to the book, which is also my first venture into the e-book market: available for ibook, nook, and kindle readers. For more information on the print or electronic editions, [click here].

The last weekend in April was spent in North Dakota with a lovely group of ladies for their annual state-wide retreat. I shared four messages, including a new one: "Remember Ruth," and a special presentation on perspective for the young ladies. It was my first time in North Dakota, but I hope not my last, and I'm looking forward to being in South Dakota in the fall. I didn't get any pictures from the services there, but here's a lovely picture of a full-scale replica I toured in Fargo of Norway's Hopperstad Stave Church.

The first weekend in May I had the pleasure of being in Maine with Brenda Bowley and the wonderful ladies in her district. It was a great time of ministry, and I left refreshed myself, encouraged in my spirit by the words shared by others as well as the thick presence of God. Skits, banquets, worship, and Word...this conference had it all! We had deep moves during altar services and the Lord touched many lives. There's nothing like the presence of the Lord!

Also in May, yet...another banquet...this one in Merrillville, Indiana, where I spoke on "Pursology." It was a lot of fun, with some spiritual application, as well. Saturday I did two sessions with the young ladies on "The Girl in the Dress." The girls and lady teachers were very attentive and I hope encouraged by the presentation that included much-o slides, music and even a clip from "The Beverly Hillbillies." You never know what to expect when you hand me the microphone...although, I hope to always leave people encouraged and excited about serving God. It is the best life ever!

On a personal note, I had a blast with my daughter's 6th grade class on a three-day trip to Mackinac Island. And, of course, the end of the school year brought awards presentations, piano recitals, and more. Life is busy, but life is good. Not every day is easy. We each face our own unique challenges, but remember this...

When life doesn't turn out how you expected...
Definitely not what you thought you were signing up for...
It can still be good...
Because God is good...
And He has good plans for those who love Him!

Well...it's here. Hello, 2011!

With a new year comes a bunch of busy-work. I spent the first week doing end-of-the-year paperwork, inventory, etc., and clearing off my desk, pondering and praying over what to focus my energies on this year.

I made a short list, just 37 items (lol), of topics I wanted to investigate and write on. I guess I have to narrow that down, huh? I'm glad to say that I have. I believe I have some clear direction where to go first, and I'm glad about that. More to follow on that subject in the coming weeks.

Also glad to report that More to Life now has the first draft of "Covered by Love" in their hands. It is Book 2 of the Pure Path series. The first was the wonderfully received "The Girl in the Dress." I'm excited to see this project complete.

Just to whet your appetite, I also have in the works the publication of an inspirational historical fiction romance that I am just crazy about. It's called "The Rose of Sharon," and takes place in Kentucky in 1859. I'll have more information on that soon.

My Old Kentucky Home...and then some...

The past month has been an exciting and busy one that included two trips to Kentucky and one to Tennessee. I'll start off with my home, sweet home. It was great to speak at Calvary Apostolic Tabernacle in Paducah at the invitation of Pastor Rick and Patty Romain. What was going to be a youth presentation blossomed into the Sunday morning message for all, "Walking in Agreement with God's Calling and Purpose for Your Life." There were folks from several area churches who joined us in the evening for "You Have a Field to Defend."

Karen Davis from Life Tabernacle in Selmer, Tennessee, invited me to speak at their annual ladies conference. We had a great time and Sis. Davis posted these comments on facebook afterwards: "Ladies Conference 2010. WOW WOW WOW Anyone who knows me, knows that I am seldom speechless; but, this is one of those times. Last night was great; but, today exceeding ANYTHING that I ever imagined. Truly, TRULY, fantastic." When God shows up among the people of God, it's just one dynamic happening, and I was thrilled to be there with my sister, Sandy, too.

On the way home, I just about killed myself taking two of my kids to Kings Island for a last summer's hoorah. Yes...I rode this roller coaster and lots more before finishing the ride home to Michigan. I know it's crazy, but I do have my limits. I refuse to ride those old wooden ones that beat you up and make you feel like you need to go to the chiropractor...

The following Saturday I spoke at a "Growing in Intimacy" Prayer Conference in Troy, Michigan, sponsored by Front Line Ministries For Christ, and then, can you believe it...ran away with the girls for a quick trip to Kentucky once again to visit the Creation Museum. It was a wonderful trip all around and a rare opportunity to connect with a friend, Debbie Summers, who had been on the mission field for two years in Cyprus. However, I did, as you can see in the picture here, almost get eaten by a dinosaur. =D

Among the adventures, we were told a slave house was somewhere on the back of the old Victorian home we stayed in; however, the grounds were completely overgrown with brambles, brush and such. I was very interested in seeing it because I have studied a lot on slavery and the Underground Railroad: 1) for the published book, A Patchwork of Freedom, and 2) for the not-yet-published book, a historical Christian romance called The Rose of Sharon. I assure you, I am not Miss Woodlady of the World, but I really wanted to see it, so we tried twice--getting pricked with prickers, limbs caught in our hair, burrs buried in all our clothes...and the second day we found it.

Because of the date the main house appeared to be built, and the structure of the delapidated building we found out past the swamp, I'm not sure what we saw was a slave house, although it could have been. Some of the structure was definitely older than a back portion that appeared to be an addition. But it was an adventure I won't forget...especially since my cohorts shared one pair of boots so they could each have a "lead foot" as they walked through the dense growth.

To top the whole thing off with something better than a cherry...we met up with some more old friends, Diana and Janice Reed, at the Grand Finale for a phenomenol dinner. It was delicious and so great to see these wonderful people again who have meant so much to me as my previous pastor's wife and mother.

This last picture was taken as we prepared to part ways. We laughed. We cried. We talked. We prayed. We ate. We explored...every moment, word and experience lived in the presence of our wonderful God...the One Who brought us all together and made us part of His precious family. I just love my Jesus! Yes, I do!

And now, I prepare to leave next week for Jefferson City, Tennesse, and the Tri-Cities ladies conference...followed by General Conference in Houston...then ladies events in Hastings, Michigan; Bridgeport, Michigan; and Newport News, Virginia. I hope to see some of you in my travels...and I truly appreciate your prayers and support.

And that was the theme for the Arizona Ladies Conference...based on Ecclesiastes 3:1-8..."It's Time...to Sing, Dance, Laugh, Heal, Give."

It was such a blessing to be a part of this anointed conference, speak alongside Nancy Grandquist, and meet sweet Debbie Akers.

And only a few short days later, I packed up again...this time with my son and daughter, and headed South. It was a wonderful conference in Selmer, Tennessee, followed by a special happening for me...speaking in my hometown of Paducah, Kentucky. Thank you, Karen Davis, in Tennessee, and the Romains in Paducah, for having me.

Goodbye, St. Louis & Denver...Hello, Mesa, Arizona!

This is me and my sonny boy, Charles, in St. Louis this month for the North American Bible Quiz Tournament--the final competition of the 2010 season, or what we fondly call "nationals.' I was so glad I got to be with him and the team...and perhaps if I keep my van I'll be asked to drive again next year. It was a blast!

I was blessed to be at Landmark Tabernacle in Denver with Rev. and Mrs. Billy Hale for their second annual "Family First" weekend. It was great! I got to do all the things I love...At the top of the list was participate in fantastic worship and hear awesome messages from Pastor Hale and others. Saturday I spoke to the youth and the ladies in separate sessions and then the wonderful church family Sunday evening. This picture is a little after-service pizza party with the Hales, Hoods, Elmses and company.

And just for fun, I've included one of my favorite pictures. This is me peddling my little sister Cheryl around in our hometown, Paducah, Kentucky. I'm headed there soon, after Arizona, and also to Selmer, Tennessee. So check the schedule to the right if you're in any of these areas. It would be so great to see you at any of the events. As I scurry about getting ready to leave for Denver tomorrow morning (please pray), I thought I'd make a quick post to let you know about an unusual Affirming Faith opportunity to save some cash and get a great resource.

The first print run of A Patchwork of Freedom came in with two slight errors.

1. The first letters of the titles were missing at the beginning of the chapters. These have been written in by hand.

2. The table of contents did not include page numbers.

Other than that, the print quality of the cover and interior are still the same excellent quality as the 1st quality books. But for those who love a bargain...it's an opportunity to share with a large audience for a small price.

When I attempt to define freedom, I tend to include its opposite: captivity. Emotional, spiritual and physical captivity come in kaleidoscope shapes and shadings--their one constant: the desire of those held in their bonds for...

INDEPENDENCE...FREEDOM...

It's ironic, but as a Christian, true independence comes when we understand and embrace the reality that we are fully dependant on God...for the very breath we breathe...for life itself. Along with the dynamic possibilities and promises walking with God brings, living in right relationship with Jesus provides a wonderful sense of liberty.

When we find that balance between "without me (Jesus) you can do nothing" (John 15:5) and "I can do all things through Christ" (Philippians 4:13), we find the launching pad to fulfilling our potential and purpose in God. True freedom is found in accepting the limitations of our humanity...within God's loving constraints...while at the same time being empowered by His Spirit to live an abundant overcoming life full of destiny and purpose! This is freedom! This is plain old exciting and fun!

Ok. Whoa. I'm easing off the gas pedal before I drive full throttle into a "Gates & Fences" talk on the blessings and protections of biblical boundaries. "But why?" you ask. Wow and Wow!

Wow...had a great ALJC Ladies Retreat in Frankenmuth April 16-17! Love those Bavarian Inn chicken dinners, and the hospitality of the staff as well as the event organizers was phenomenal. The atmosphere in the room was one of expectation, and there was a sweet presence of the Lord both Friday and Saturday.

I felt impressed that Friday would be a time of healing, and Saturday would be a time of teaching. So I spoke first on Quilting Patches of Life and then on Covered by Love. A big thanks to all the ladies who were so kind in their reception, feedback, and in buying lots and lots of Affirming Faith resources! Such a blessing!

Wow...yes, this is a two-part wow blog entry. I received a message today asking if I could speak in Canada this weekend. So off I go on Wednesday to the Central Canadian Ladies District annual retreat. Looking forward to being at the Wilderness Edge Lodge in Manitoba. I'm speaking four times, so if you think of me, please pray God's blessings and covering over the entire event.

Today has been quite a day! Yes it has. "Holy Intimacy" is officially in production and scheduled to be delivered on time for the ladies conference in Frankenmuth next week. I can't wait to share it with the ladies there and plan to speak on one of the themes of the book on Saturday morning: "Covered by Love."

Reprints! Yeah!

I know I say this often...but I'M SO EXCITED! "The Girl in the Dress" has been out two months and is already going into reprints! What an awesome response!

I had the pleasure of leading worship and speaking at the quarterly Pastors & Intercessors Network Ministry hosted by Zion Christian Church this morning.

And I'm working diligently on a new project on intimacy with God as revealed through the Tabernacle in the wilderness. It's a fascinating study that begins in the Garden of Eden and ends in Revelation. I can't wait to share more with you in the future.

Looking forward to two soon-coming speaking engagements. One in Frankenmuth and one in Kentwood--both in Michigan. And on a personal note, my stepdaughter is getting married and my oldest daughter's graduation open house is scheduled for the following day. Busy, busy, busy.

Just a little poem to introduce a new project I'm working on. It began with a simple commitment to read the Bible through this year. From there it sprouted into a personal study on the Tabernacle that blossomed into a major project I can't wait to share.

I don't have the title yet, but I know at least one of the presentations/segments will be titled Shut in with God to Shine Among Men.

It's a study on intimacy with God--a theme that runs through the entire Bible, from Genesis to Revelation. I have wept at the beauty I have found in the Word--God's plan for relationship, for a Bride for Himself. Someone to respond to His love--willingly, openly, without reserve. Someone to enter into the private chamber of His Holy Place and dwell in His presence among the angels.

So, I'm letting go of the frenzied pace
to enter in that secret place
to partake of delights yet unknown
Drawing near to the ark, the throne
'Til at last I pass through gates of pearl
And become forever Jesus' girl

Oh, yes, it's corny...

Did you expect something else? LOL! But there really is a lot of depth to what I'm studying. Here's a sample that will hopefully whet your appetite and give you something to think about:

Frankincense and myrrh are both harvested from trees slashed or wounded to release their sap. The Bible uses trees symbolically to represent people. If I am a tree, is it my life’s wounds that release the sap used to create the incense that mingles with my prayers before the Lord?

WELL...On the business side of things...

I've scheduled several events this year already (see schedule on sidebar) and have been requested for more that have not been finalized. I've been asked to speak in India and Kenya, and am taking these to prayer. The calendar is getting complicated with personal items as well. My step-daughter plans to marry one week from my first-born's high school graduation. Yikes!

Sharing the Love ... or Love Lessons

Yesterday was Valentine's Day, and because it fell on a Sunday, Pastor Walker decided to do something different for morning worship service. He asked a few couples to share something they've learned about being married. This is what I spoke on.

First, for two people to have a successful marriage, they have to realize they are just that...two people. My husband is a wonderful person...one who also happens to have flaws. Guess what!?! So am I! So are you! I can't expect perfection when I can't give it. And I have learned to accept my husband even on the rare occasions he disappoints me -- even when he purposefully pushes my buttons. He's a big tease, but a sweetheart, and I'm blessed to be married to a man who loves me, cares for me, supports me and prays for me...even if he makes me crazy from time to time (those of you who know him will say amen).

I have to say my greatest lesson has come from my greatest challenge. Not only do men and women think differently and feel differently due to gender issues, but every person has a basic motivational thrust -- their first-response to a situation that gives some insight into who they are and how they think.

Here's an example. If someone spills a can of paint, what is your initial gut response? Bill, the more compassionate of the Wagners, would first respond to the person's emotions. "Oh, no. I'm so sorry that happened." He'd be right there with a towel to help clean it up, too. I, on the other hand, would react in a different way. "How in the world did that happen?" Arms might even flap as I attempted to figure out what caused it and make sure it didn't happen again.

Another person might be motivated by service. They would immediately clean up the spill as their first reaction. Someone else might be motivated by giving. They would run right out and buy you another can. An encourager-type might give you a 12-step plan on how not to spill paint. See how all these different motivations can play out in our lives? Understanding your spouse's basic motivation will help you process the way they react to and approach life--it can really eliminate a lot of frustration.

Lastly, what I've learned is that the place where my husband and I clash the most is the very place we probably need each other the most. Here's another example. I have a tendency to want to make quick decisions. My husband likes to take a very contemplative approach to decision making. Well, you can see how this could put a strain on a marriage. I can't say I love it when decisions don't happen within my self-imposed time frame (fingers drumming on the desk or toes tapping beneath), but I have learned to better temper my compulsive tendencies and trust my husband, especially on the big decisions. And perhaps Bill has learned in our 12 years of marriage to be more purposeful about decision making and not hold off when there is no reason to delay.

So there's some of the Wagner dirty laundry out on the line. Marriage is great, and although it's not always easy, I hope you will learn from my school-of-hard-knocks lessons that God uses our spouses to help us grow personally and spiritually.

Conference Highlights

I had a request for some of the highlights from Because of the Times. Keep in mind this is a conference for ministers and these are totally out-of-context excerpts from 40 pages of notes taken over two-and-a-half days...so here we go...

Bro. David Bernard - Our world's greatest revival is in front of us. To see it we must think outside the box, reach out to those who are searching spiritually and remember the most cutting-edge and relevant thing we have is the power of the Holy Ghost.

Governor Bobby Jindal - Don't worry about your questions for God. Worry about His questions for you.

Bro. Anthony Mangun - Church shouldn't be a place to go to, but a place to go from. Even if you're taking God from where He was to where He wants to be, we have to do it His way and not look to what the Philistines did (when David retrieved the ark of the covenant). There is only one way to have revival--the Holy Ghost. We can get so "deep" we miss the depth of the Holy Ghost. There are no large or small churches in the Kingdom--God walks AMONG the candlesticks.

Bro. Terry Shock - You CAN teach an old dog new tricks. Don't live your life on cliche theology, but on the Word of God. God doesn't put more on us than we can bear, but we can.

Dr. Archibald Hart - Finishing well starts at the beginning. God is more concerned that we finish well than be a "success." We have to live within the boundaries of God's design and God designed us to be fragile, weak, vulnerable clay pots. We can't be spiritual and deny our humanity. Jesus obeyed every physical law, even the law of rest. It is not great talent God blesses, but likeness to Jesus. The vessel must be clean or the message won't be. God designed our stress reaction and recovery cycle--it is part of His creation. Build in recovery time.

Bro. Michael Williams - Rending garments signaled grief and desparation--a problem or dilemma or tragedy that defied resolution. Priests were forbidden to rend their garments. There is nothing too overwhelming for God. The priests of the second temple rent their garments in Jesus' presence, but Jesus' robe, our high priest, was not torn. We are called not to rend our clothes in despair and hopelessness, but to rend our hearts.

Bro. Wayne Huntley - Don't flirt with birthing something wild you can never regain or remove. Preempt the conception. What you preach is what God will do. The devil can't put any yoke on you the anointing of God can't break. Don't transfer your need for approval and acceptance to those who stand around false fires, but from those of like precious faith.

Bro. T.F. Tenney - Don't ask "What do you believe?" but "Who do you trust?". We can use the name of God without knowing His character--we must express His character through love. Revelation + experience = power. We can't invoke the name of Jesus to accomplish the will of man. Jesus is on the mercy seat, not the judgment seat. The devil never showed up in the Old Testament tabernacle or temple, but he did in the synagogue. There was no mercy seat there; only the law. Some of the things we preach against aren't sin, but they keep us from sin. God put all the meaning and power of the Old Testament names of God in Jesus, and we have to experience Him in these ways to be empowered. Jesus isn't just the A and Z, but everything in between.

Sis. Vesta Mangun - Nothing hell can produce can upstage the Church. We should wear our hearts on our sleeves: not our emotions and feelings, but our real selves. Get real. Pull off the mask. If you love God, wear it for all to see. Our prayers have the power to heal the past and provide for the future. Lead people into prayer, into revival, into winning our cities. If we haven't done well how can Jesus say "Well done"?

Bro. Robbie Mitchell - To achieve global impact we must have individual impact. Every person is extremely important to God. When our words and our actions don't go together there is a problem. We can't neglect evangelism to minister to petty needs of saints. Nothing should interfere with our focus on the lost.

Bro. Jeff Arnold - The dimension of faith is like a jetstream; we have to jump into it. We are anchored to Jesus and He is unmovable. In overwhelming times we need an overcoming God. Your destiny is not up to the devil. Anchors give us stability and keep us from drifting. They will hold us as long as we keep in the right direction, but they can be dislodged if you circle around and go the opposite direction. Don't try to escape what God wants you to experience.

Generous January

Yep, that's what I said..."generous January." The Lord has blessed the beginning of the new year in so many ways.

First, the holidays were just awesome and my sweet husband gave me the most wonderful Christmas gift: a ticket to Because of the Times (BOTT), a tremendous conference where I marinated in the rich presence and Word of the Lord for three days. It was great and I'll be feasting on what I took from there for a long time...no kidding...I took over 40 pages of hand-written notes.

One special lady really blessed my slippers off when she placed an order for 100 copies of Gates & Fences for an upcoming mother-daughter conference. I was so happy to sign and pray over each book and hope the young ladies are encouraged by this thoughtful gift.

I am so happy I have all my ducks in a row for tax season (I hope and will find out tomorrow). What a huge undertaking. I have a confession. I use the shoebox method for receipts. It's very convenient throughout the year, but quite a mountain of work to prepare Affirming Faith, my husband's drywall and plastering business and our personal things for the accountant. But I know myself, and I will trade the 361 days of non-filing and non-spreadsheeting for the 4 days of sweating it out during tax season.

One very nice thing I ran across this month was a file of devotional thoughts I wrote probably 15 years ago. They were written before my first husband passed and I could see the Lord's hand preparing me for the road ahead in the things he showed me. Here's a sample, and I'll be adding some to the Message in a Bottle blog (see link in column at right).
Worry or faith?
Anxiety or hope?
Apprehension or trust?
The answers are etched on our faces by time.
Are we creating a sculpture of a frowning person
...or one full of hope and joy?
Say what we will, time will tell.

...to Your faithfulness.
Thank You for the hope and peace I have in You.

December Days

December has been such a rich and rewarding month. I was so privileged to assist the Troy Police and VFW Post distributing baskets to families struggling to make ends meet in our Michigan economy. The bulk of the work was done by the Police and VFW, but the Pastors & Intercessors Network Ministry (www.pinmtroy.blogspot.com) raised money to assist in the purchases during our October prayer walk, and it was a blessing to be a small part of seeing their mission accomplished.

I had the cutest little assistant at the Cultural Christmas Extravaganza hosted by People of the Book Lutheran Outreach Ministries. I researched traditional Armenian Christmas traditions and shared some of them along with my book, Bachik, the Birthday Kiss, and other Affirming Faith resources. It was a fun evening and I was glad to have my daughter Hope with me in coordinating holiday fashions.

On a personal note, my husband delighted me with fresh roping this year, something I've always admired and wanted to do at my own home. Bill works on stilts in his drywall business, and that really came in handy when he and Charles were putting up the outside decorations.

Of course, there were Christmas concerts, a school play, a church children's musical, family get-togethers, and my first-born daughter Noelle turned 18 this month. Along with all the activities, I have found some time to write, because there was much on my heart to write about. She wanted me to share the message I gave in Colorado Springs this past October called "You Have a Field to Defend." I forgot to take my camera, but here's a picture of Sylvia and me at a training we hosted in my neck of the woods previously.

Christmas Cultural Extravaganza - 12/18 in Rochester Hills

Snowflakes and Soap Boxes

Ok, folks. I just have to share a beautiful story I heard at the National Day of Prayer Conference. It's the true story of a frozen embryo that proves to me, without a doubt, life begins at conception.

An embryo,
frozen for four years,
was FedExed,
thawed out
and implanted
in a courageous and loving woman's womb.

This embryo grew and is now a beautiful six-year-old girl.

The little darling that flounced into conference clinging to her mommy's hand, was not the biological result of her adoptive mother and father, but was life created in a lab...
life that was given a chance to live...
life that was not fodder for experimentation that would not be allowed on a guinea pig these days.

The story brings to mind the words of the great philospher, Dr. Seuss, who said,

"A person's a person, no matter how small."

And, scientifically speaking, it also proves that life can only be generated by the union of a male and female, the way God established from the beginning of humanity.

A human embryo, from the moment of conception, is viable given the opportunity and environment to live. If you're interested in finding out more, do a search on "embryo adoption" and see what comes up in your area.

Three Surprises!

Yes, life has been full of surprises lately, beginning with an overnight stay at the Minneapolis/St. Paul airport when my connecting flight to Colorado Springs was cancelled. It was quite an experience. I had checked in my coat and scarf and had nothing to cover myself with as I lay on the airline-provided floor mat, but the Lord provided a fleece hoodie through the kindness of a fellow stranded passenger, and I felt His presence and protection as the night passed. I also got a lesson on posting photos through my Blackberry onto Facebook and had fun sharing all the craziness with my FB friends.

I ended up flying from Detroit to Minneapolis to Houston to finally fly to Colorado Springs, and after all that, I have to say it was well worth the effort. The National Day of Prayer Conference was excellent, as expected, and I was blown away by the response I received from the sessions I taught. Thank you to all who prayed for me.

Photos are of Mrs. Shirley Dobson; me and Jean Truty; two of my favorite NDP ladies: Lisa Crump and Sue Stoltz; and the glorious view from the Focus on the Family Headquarters that houses the NDP offices. Tony Perkins and Wil Graham were both great in their own unique ways as they presented in the general sessions and John Egan and company did a phenomenal job with the worship. There was much going on, but with my travel woes and being a presenter, I feel like I missed quite a bit this year--especially disappointed to miss the Focus on the Family chapel service, but all was well and good.

After waiting all day for a flight that was cancelled, I stood in line for an hour to get rebooked. As I waited my hand kept going, of its own volition, to my hip in a very attitudinal way. Each time I noticed it I slapped it down and told myself I wasn't allowed to get an attitude! I was going to speak at a prayer conference for goodness sake! It was funny, and I felt victorious that I didn't cave in to the emotions that attempted to overwhelm and distract me. Praise God for that.

Surprise 2: It's official! Christian 101 is now available to the public. I can hardly believe it.

My family and I have been using this for our devotions, and the kids have been enjoying it. I wrote this to help new believers and youth get grounded in the fundamentals of the Christian faith and develop the habit of pulling out their Bibles, having daily prayer times and journaling.

And, Surprise 3 (drum roll please)...on the very same day, today, The Eight Days of Christmas is now available as well. You haven't heard much about this project, so I'll add the copy from the back of the book that tells more about it.

The Last Couple of Weeks

The last couple of weeks have been ultra busy. Seems like that is a trend this time of year.

I'll upload a few pictures and give a brief synopsis starting with Sunday, September 20. This first picture is me and my baby, Mr. Bill Wagner at Troy Daze. Our church, Faith Apostolic Church of Troy had a booth at this community event and we were there helping out, meeting folks, hosting games and just having a good time with our neighbors in Troy.

I didn't get pictures of this, but as part of the the Pastors & Intercessors Network Ministry (PINM), our church hosted the quarterly prayer breakfast September 26.

September 30 I flew out to General Conference in St. Louis and when I returned found this picture on the conference website. I wasn't able to stay for the entire event, but was so glad to be there for Ladies Day, the drama Wednesday night and also to be included in other meetings and events. And, as always, it was such a pleasure to be with the bookstore people who always make me feel welcome. Thank you, Publishing Hosue, for promoting my books and for those peanut M&Ms and diet Dr. Pepper!

The reason I had to come home early was for Praying for the Heart of Troy on October 3. I've uploaded one picture here, but there is a complete write-up with more pictures on the blog: www.praytroy.blogspot.com. I was excited that even though it rained we still had about 100 people in attendance and at least 8 churches represented as we gathered to pray for the needs of our community: our economy, businesses, families, government, etc.

And last, but certainly not least, the St. John's Armenian Fair was a blast, and I was so glad my family was there with me at a Bachik, the Birthday Kiss book signing on Sunday, October 4.

Everyone was so nice from the kids area to the bookstore. The children enjoyed actively participating in the book reading, and of course, the food was delicious...lahmajun and birds' nests...mmm, yummy!

"Christian 101" is in the printworks

I'm so excited! It seems I say that a lot here, but hey, this is where I share the exciting stuff, right? So...I'm so excited! No official date for release yet for this project that has been burning in my heart for some time now, but within the next month or so. Christian 101 is a 10-week daily devotional/ instructional book for new believers and youth that provides solid answers and a strong foundation for the Christian faith.

Delinquent

Yes...I've been delinquent in keeping the blog updated this summer, but I'm glad to report the kids have started back to school, the Lord blessed my hubby with a job, and I should have a bit more quiet time to get things like this done.

Speaking at the Annual NDP Summit

The two times I’ve attended the National Day of Prayer Summit have ranked among the spiritual highlights of the last few years. Gathering with Christians of all denominations from across the country is an event in itself, but when those people are committed to prayer and seeing God’s will accomplished in our communities and nation, it ignites a synergistic explosion of hope and enthusiasm that carries beyond the borders of the event and inspires its participants in the months that follow.

Every aspect of the Summit is bathed in prayer. The organizers obviously attend to every detail with meticulous care. Attendees begin the event as honored guests of the monthly Focus on the Family chapel service. From there, we participate in joint sessions with special guest speakers and break-out workshops where we select the topics that particularly appeal to our areas of interest or concern.

The fellowship alone, sharing meals and worship and hearing Mrs. Dobson are reason enough to go, but the icing on the cake, the communion and commissioning service on Sunday morning, creates an indelible spiritual mark on all those who participate.

The summit is absolutely worth every penny and every bit of effort you spend to get there. This year Jon Egan of the Desperation Band will be leading worship and Tony Perkins and Will Graham join Mrs. Dobson as featured speakers.

Jury Pool Reflections

For the first time in my 44 years, I was called to jury duty. Before the official selction process began, Judge Michael Warren spoke to those assembled and gave an inspiring talk about what makes America great--the opportunity for a fair trial before a jury of peers. After orientation, my number was called first, but of the 20 in the group, I was not seated, so I returned to the big waiting room, asked for some paper and began writing my musings:

It's official . . . the release of Bachik!

What a wonderful time at the official book release event for Bachik, the Birthday Kiss. Thank you so much, Edgar Hagopian and Pam, for making the event such a success. And to Bob and Gayaneh Kachadourian for connecting all the dots to bring everyone together.

It was a delight to share a bit of the history and purpose of Bachik, as well as read the book for the children and adults present. We had a raffle and gave away a Bachik t-shirt and magnets, enjoyed some great refreshments and, as my family calls it, hopla music!

Fr. Diran Papazian of St. John's Armenian Church, assisted by David Terzibashian, performed a traditional Armenian blessing. Stacks of autographed copies left in the hands of smiling people, and that made me very happy, too. Pictured with me are Edgar Hagopian and Dr. Robert Kachadourian.

Happy Mother's Day

What a lovely Mother's Day banquet at the Armenian Congregational Church in Southfield, Michigan. The food was excellent (of course), the decorations were gorgeous (I have some of the beautiful pink roses in my kitchen), and the hospitality was warm and flowing. National Day of Prayer

I had the privilege of being at two NDP events this year. The first at my kids' school in the morning and the second in Troy where I coordinated the event in years past. I am thankful we live in a country where we still enjoy the right to gather peacefully on public property and express our faith and thoughts. We are blessed to live in the United States, and may God bless America...in Jesus' name!

I appreciate all the people that participated from my home church, especially my pastor, Marvin Walker, who gave some history of the NDP in America and led in a closing prayer.

And, of course, it's always a special treat to meet up with my hubby in the middle of the day. He was able to scoot over on his lunch hour. I'm blessed with a praying man.

Bachik, the Birthday Kiss - Reading at Manoogian School

What a joy to be with the kids from the Manoogian School. We had so much fun together sharing Bachik, the Birthday Kiss. After the book reading, I attended a tea at St. John's Armenian Church for Baroness Caroline Cox. It was wonderful to learn of the humanitarian work she is doing with the Armenian people, and of course, you know the food was awesome.

I left straight from there for Kentucky to participate in the annual Paducah Quilt Show. A guest of Rob & Betty's Quilt Books Unlimited exhibit, I met hundreds of people and shared Quilting Patches of Life over a three-day period. You know, quilters are just nice people. Have you ever met a mean-tempered quilter? I haven't. I was privileged to speak at the Wedneday evening service at Northside Church of God on the subject, "You Have a Field to Defend" and was so thankful many of my family were there. It was an honor to speak at my deceased father's home church.

From Paducah, I spun out to Indiana Ladies Retreat to enjoy the conference and sign more books. Always nice to be with the ladies in Indiana, especially my hostess with the mostest, Beverly. Thanks for everything. You were a doll!

A Patchwork of Freedom

Yeah! I am finally finished! Are wondering what I'm so excited about as you watch the little smiley face guy do his happy dance????

I just sent a proposal to my agent, Les Stobbe, for the sequel to Quilting Patches of Life. The name of the book is A Patchwork of Freedom, and here's a bit from the proposal:

THE HOOK
A mysterious quilt code, runaway slaves and the Underground Railroad unite this inspiring collection of contemporary true stories, each with a message of freedom and hope.

SYNOPSIS
Delightful to read, A Patchwork of Freedom pieces together scraps of history, yarns of old, and contemporary tales of liberty and hope in a unique inspirational work. Bringing rich texture and hue to the project, author Lori Wagner intertwines modern-day life lessons experienced by Christian men and women from around the world with an “Underground Railroad Quilt Code” and antebellum America.

Each story, titled with the name of a quilt pattern relating to the “Code” or the Underground Railroad, imparts useful wisdom and insight gained by its contributing author. Awesome Iowa!

What a pleasure to be in Iowa this past week. Sis. George was a wonderful hostess, and all the ladies on the committee did a fantastic job with the 2009 Iowa Ladies Retreat.

Everything was lovely...the accommodations, the meals, the worship...

Thank you, Iowans, for putting up with my "corny" jokes! It was an honor to speak at the Apostolic Assembly of Anamosa Sunday morning and celebrate three baptisms! The evening Mexican Fiesta youth event was a blast, and I hope all the young people will remember that God really, really loves them...closer-than-your-closest-friend kind of love!

Thank you for the lovely parting gifts. I had a time getting all my stuff loaded on the plane.

What happened to the last month?

The last few weeks have been incredibly busy! Just to hit the highlights...

I represented my precinct as a delegate to the Michigan Republican party's state convention in Lansing and served as a teller in the 9th District Caucus.

The beautiul color proof for Bachik, the Birthday Kiss came in. The project was wrapped up and is now at the printer.

A Patchwork of Freedom (sequel to Quilting Patches of Life) has been edited and the proposal is almost ready to forward to my agent.

My taxes are done...yeah! Two corporations (me and my hubby) and one personal return. Scads of paperwork!

My husband and I celebrated my birthday at the Royal Park Hotel where we enjoyed a fabulous meal and heard incredible Nick Vujicic (of Life Without Limbs) speak at a fundraiser for the Crisis Pregnancy Center.

I've been busily preparing to speak in Iowa this weekend. I look forward to being with the ladies Friday and Saturday at the Gateway Hotel and Conference Center in Ames. Sunday morning, the Apostolic Assembly of Anamosa has invited me to speak in the morning service, and they are hosting a youth event in the evening that I'm very excited about. The title for the youth presentation is, "Pickled in His Presence" and please pray with me for open hearts and God to move at all of these events.

Much of yesterday was spent in Grand Rapids with the very hospitable and efficient folks at Heule Gordon. It was quite an experience watching Tiffany bring Andrea's warm and wonderful artwork together with the story of Bachik the Birthdya Kiss into a beautiful book. And Carl Heule has been so helpful in lining everything up, making the decisions necessary to see this project through to completion.

It looks like it will be about three months before I receive the first shipment, but it will be worth the wait. This company puts out a quality product that I can't wait to share with everyone, especially my Armenian friends and family...and the new people I will meet at the Armenian ladies retreat I was just booked to speak at on June 6.

Out of the Blue

For those who don't know my history, you may think this next project is completely out of the blue, and to some degree, it is. My first husband (deceased in 1997), was Armenian, and also a twin--very artistic, too. Before he got sick, we often traveled out East to visit his family where I experienced much of the Armenian culture: food, language, music, etc. My mother-in-law played jumping, clapping games with my little girl, and I've recently relived many of those memories when my younger brother-in-law brought a new little boy into the family.

So...here comes a new book! Following are one of the pictures painted by the very talented Andrea Kalajian, my niece and the daughter of my deceased husband's twin. There's a bit of copy from the back cover, too.

A delightful, interactive book, Bachik the Birthday Kiss engages young and old in its mingling of Armenian and English. This vibrantly illustrated, lively work is sure to be a favorite among children and educators, Armenian and non-Armenian alike. A pronunciation guide is included, and children will clap, jump and count along with the birthday boy as he celebrates his big day—a special time with family that ends in a double-cheeked birthday kiss.

Mary Moments in my Maniacal Martha World

I admit it. I'm so easily distracted. My mind is like a butterfly flittering here and there. Well enough, I say! Today, I am in Alexandria, Louisiana, for the Because of the Times prayer conference.

You should see me at home, though. Here's a typical scenario: Working on a book I walk into the kitchen for coffee where I begin emptying the dishwasher, but notice something on the counter that needs to go upstairs. Before I know it, I have half the laundry out of the dryer (yes, I have upstairs laundry and it's wonderful), but then the phone rings...and if you look back over my trail, you will see the unfinished projects in my wake.

Three hours later I notice the dryer door is still opened, my coffee cup is still in the microwave cold as anything, and the bottom rack of the dishwasher was never emptied. But I probably did go back to my desk and get some writing done. It's my passion! And if you want to know what real passion is, consider this: passion comes from a root word that means to suffer. Passion (true love) suffers. I guess that makes the phrase "the passion of the Christ" make sense, doesn't it? Jesus certainly loved us so deeply He was willing to suffer for us.

Anyway...I am so excited. I left all my books and brochures behind, my writing work, too, to turn away from distraction and responsibilites and submerge in the presence of God. Yes, I'm on my computer today, but it is getting turned off in the morning and I don't plan to get back on for the next three days. Praise God!

While I was here I received a wonderful message from someone who gave her 81-year-old neighbor a copy of Quilting Patches of Life. Her quote follows:

She commented on the comfort she received while reading your book last year as her husband was in his final days.

I also received a note from another saying:

...your ministry to me became a ministry of restoration. I began to feel hope...The more you poured out from your unselfish life, into my very wounded life, the more healing took place...
Folks, it just doesn't get any better than that. Hearing I've impacted the lives of others--well, it's just awesome and makes all the hard work worthwhile.

That's what Affirming Faith is all about: encouraging everyone, wherever they are in their walk with God, to have hope--and also to share the good message that there is always more in God. I know you probably thought I had all this Christianity thing all wrapped up, but no (just kidding BTW). The man or woman at the highest pinnacle in their spiritual walk with God can still learn more and be more for Him.

Sure, I'm hoping for a nice contract on my latest novel (feel free to add that to your prayer list), but the joy of impacting lives for Jesus is far more valuable than earthly gain, and I thank the Lord for the many wonderful opportunities He's given to me.

God's Gonna Shine in 2009!

Don't you believe it? I do! I was sitting at my desk working, and the phrase came to mind... Yes! God's Gonna Shine in 2009! And we are His little lights!

I'm an upbeat person, but also a realist. As I shared breakfast with my husband this morning, in celebration of our anniversary, we talked about our goals and concerns for 2009. There is much going on in our world, but as I looked across the table into his sparkling blue eyes, I realized something.

"I feel happy," I said.

Bill smiled, and we held hands across the tabletop. Although we scaled back on expenditures this holiday, I'd still been so busy I didn't really take the time to "check in" with my emotions, but I realized I was happy.

"Sometimes I'm almost afraid to feel happy, because I know life is going to smack me down again," I said.

"If you're happy," he replied, "or your miserable, the devil's still going to try to smack you down even farther. You might as well choose to be happy."

Sage advice...Thanks, Bill! Now, remember...let your little light shine for Jesus!

Christmas Prayer Breakfast & Book Signing Event

What a lovely Christmas prayer breakfast the Pastors' & Intercessors' Network Ministry shared this morning[pinmtroy.blogspot.com].

I'm pictured with, Pam Hancock from Zion Christian Church; and the guys are Pastor Bob Cholette from Troy Assembly (who hosted the event), Don Aupperle from Hope Community Baptist and Family Life Radio, and my own dear husband, Bill.

People gathered from several area churches. We enjoyed a great breakfast and wonderful worship. Representation came from the Troy City Council, and we prayed for our community and our leaders.

Last night I was invited to a book signing at Borders in Birmingham for Tom Mooradian, author of "The Repatriate: Love, Basketball, and the KGB." At an afterglow event at Hagopian World of Rugs, a unique dedication was done for the book.

In addition to meeting many wonderful people, I was thankful for the opportunity to address those assembled and tell them about the Armenian projects I'm working on, in particular, Bachik the Birthday Kiss. Although my Armenian husband passed in 1997, I still feel connected with the Armenian people, and as I sign off, I am preparing to make an Armenian dish, cheese borak, with my daughter. We'll freeze them and have them for breakfast Christmas morning...one of our annual traditions.

Detroit Armenian Women's Club

OK...so we didn't actually meet at the Geghard Monastery, but when I think of Armenia, I think of this famous location in Yerevan. I have a book proposal out, a series on world religions, one of which is titled Beyond the Tombs of Yerevan. I've also written an interactive bilingual book in Armenian and English for preschool and early elementary children titled Bachik the Birthday Kiss, and am in process with a middle school book about Armenian twins raised on the Cape in the 1950s, The Pirates of Castle Rock. Check the website in the future for availability of these titles.

Projects and silliness aside, I was pleased to speak at the December meeting of the Detroit Armenian Women's Club, and I thank the ladies for their hospitality, the fine meal, and the opportunity to share my connection with the Armenian community through my deceased husband, our children and my writing. The club is a charitable organization that raises funds for scholarships and relief work for the needy around the world.

How is this for a bird? I have to say, this is the best turkey I have ever turned out. Just goes to show what a little investment of research and effort will do. I brined the bird (I'd never heard the term "brining" before), a fresh one, followed all the guidelines for prepping, stuffing and baking, and voila--a masterpiece!

I can't help but notice the spiritual lesson here.

I admit...in years past I've pretty much thrown the bird in the oven and hoped for the best. But the results were much better when I delved into the art of preparing a turkey, researched, consulted the experts, then actually followed through.

When we apply these principles to our walk with God--checking the directions (in the Word), studying, consulting with people who have already achieved success, then actually following through--we can achieve the results we hope for, too.

That's a good question...

After a CRAZY October, I've been happily working away in my office catching up on administrative issues and writing. I've submitted a chapter for a new collaborative effort with my church. I'm excited to work with a wonderful team of godly ladies affirming the concept of modesty to Christian young women.

And...I'm working diligently to finish the manuscript of Quilting Patches of Life, Vol. 2. I've been getting inquires as to when that will be complete. I hope to have the manuscript finished within a month, and publication details will be forthcoming after I evaluate the project with my literary agent.

What a great time we had Tuesday at the monthly meeting of Warren's First United Methodist Church's ladies fellowship. Thanks to Dorothy Collins, pictured, for the invitation and making sure everything was in apple pie order.

There's nothing like getting together with ladies. I enjoyed the talk around our table as we shared coffee and Louise's wonderful homemade pastries. I thought they came from Panera...really! And the way all the women, mostly seniors, were involved in working with their hands, giving and ministering to others, really made an impact on me.

Thank you for your warm welcome, kind attention, and I have to say, when half the ladies lined up to buy books, it touched my heart, because I knew you connected with the message of "Quilting Patches of Life." God bless you all!

Troy, MI – August 31, 2008 – Surrounded by church members and guests, Rev. Marvin Walker, pastor of Faith Apostolic Church of Troy, dedicated the Peter Kalajian Memorial Fountain and the Memorial Garden area in honor of deceased members of the church. Mrs. Diana Reed, wife of deceased Rev. Mark Reed, the former pastor of the congregation, journeyed from Ohio to participate in the ceremony with her children, Marcus and Alyssa.

The beautiful granite fountain selected and garden area design were the efforts of local architect, Arthur Kalajian, the twin brother of Peter Kalajian, who passed in 1997. Peter left behind his wife Lori and their two children, Noelle and Charles, who also participated in the dedication service, along with Edward Kalajian of Cambridge, Massachussetts. With special music, slideshows, tributes, and a roll call honoring those who served their generations then passed the baton to the next, the theme of the service was "His Truth Endures to All Generations." The special service included baby dedications and an inspiring message by Rev. Marvin Walker, and concluded in prayer around the fountain.

Unbelievable! The good folks of Rochester Hills elected me to represent our precinct, and I had the privilege of first attending the county convention, and then being elected to the state convention. It was a great experience, and I am thankful I was allowed to participate in our electoral process.

Whirlwind!

The last few weeks have been a whirlwind!

This past Saturday, I faciliated an interdenominational prayer breakfast at our church. My pastor hosted the event, one of several that have taken place originating with Pam Hancock's Pastors and Intercessors Network Ministry (www.pinmtroy.blogspot.com), based at Zion Christian Church. What a sweet presence of God filled the house, and it is a blessing to join with Christians in the area to pray for our community.

And...I can't believe this one...but last Tuesday I was elected a precinct delegate in our primary election. Really, I didn't put my name on the ballot because I was bored and had some time to kill (quite the opposite). It's just that I firmly believe Christians cannot, must not abducate our responsibility to be influencers in our government and communities. If we don't let our voices be heard, they will be silenced. If we don't exercise our rights, they will atrophy.

Michigan Ladies Retreat

What a great ladies retreat we had in Albion this year at the William R. Starr campground. It was wonderful to work with the good people from the publishing house. Thank you for faithfully promoting my books and facilitating the book signings.

It was such a treat to have my daughter with me this year, and what messages we heard from Jennifer Cobb and Debbie Saiz. Life-changing stuff.

I've been asked to speak next year, and I am very excited to share with the ladies from my state in 2009.

Just thought I'd post a picture of me and my favorite pastor's wife, Claudette Walker. This was taken when I delivered a "Quilting Patches of Life" presentation at Sis. Walker's request to our ladies.

Sis. Walker injured her foot and hips in a fall, but as you can see, she's waving her flag of victory even from her reclining position. That's what I call faithful. Thank you for having me.

Grandma's Fan - Faith Apostolic 7/16 @ 7:30 p.m.

After humbly admitting to many at the annual AQS Quilt Show that I am not an avid quilter, I'm happy to share a little project I recently completed.

Pictured is a sampler of the Grandma's Fan quilt pattern I cut, pieced and quilted all by hand. Grandma's Fan is special to me. Besides being the name of this lovely pattern, it is the title of the chapter I wrote in honor of my late grandmother, Muriel Naas, in Quilting Patches of Life.

I love telling her story. People laugh when I talk about her infamous frugality, but that's not the heart of the message. There's a lesson to be learned from Grandma that inspires those who hear it to look past the mundane routine of life and remember that the little choices and little things we do can be a source of stability and blessing in the lives of others.

I have the priviledge of sharing this story and more with the ladies at Faith Apostolic Church of Troy, Wednesday, July 16, at 7:30 p.m. The public is invited to this free event held in the multipurpose room at the church located at 6710 Crooks Road in Troy, Michigan.

Ladies Conference - Covington, KY

What a treat to be with the ladies in Covington this past weekend. Thanks to the Turners for their kind invitation, and to all the church for their hospitality.

In the picture at left, I'm sandwiched between two Sis. Turners, both from Kentucky, but not related. It was great to be with "home folk." You can take the girl out of Kentucky, but you can't take the Kentucky out of the girl.

A Blast from the Past aka "Chipper the Squirrel"

It's amazing the delight a little squirrel can bring into the middle of a difficult struggle. During my husband's battle with cancer, the visits of one bushy red squirrel taught me an important spiritual lesson.

Quilting a Patch of Home...Paducah, KY

I was thrilled to return to my hometown, Paducah, Kentucky, April 23-26 for the annual quilt show. For those who don't know, Paducah's the quilt capitol of the world, and the American Quilter's Society's show attracts people from as far away as Japan.

I arrived Tuesday evening, and Wednesday started a whirlwind of activities. At 7:30 a.m. a morning show reporter from WPSD-TV met with me at the Expo Center for an interview. As the crowd swelled outside the doors, I got a sneak peek at some of the quilts. The doors swung open at 9:00 a.m., and throngs of excited people came through. The quilts were truly breathtaking. The best of show winner forfeited her $20,000 prize to keep her quilt. It was beautiful, a reproduction of her grandmother's handkerchief.

Bob and Betty of Quilt Books Unlimited graciously shared their jam-packed booth on the main floor of the Expo Center with me. So many people came through. I heard someone say up to 35,000 people come to Paducah for the show. We had a great time.

Contrary to the photo bottom left, I did wear shoes on Wednesday when I sang and spoke at Northside Church of God. The good people of the congregation opened their doors to the community and outdid themselves on the refreshments and Southern hospitality. It was such a treat to have my mother and two sisters at the event.

Each day from 11:00 to 3:00 I spent at the Expo Center signing books. On Thursday afternoon, the local Christian radio station, WGCF, asked me in for an interview. Glen and the staff were great.

A big thanks goes out to my sister and professional photographer, Tina Harper, for following me around with her camera so I can share the happenings with you.

If you live outside Michigan, you might not get the play on words, but it was a "thumbs up" time in the thumb area of the "mitten" that is Michigan this weekend.

Saturday, March 29, the Corner Store in Harbor Beach hosted a book signing and talk as the inaugural event for their new work/special events room. It was a lovely time and I enjoyed sharing the inspiring message of "Quilting Patches of Life" with a room full of avid quilters (and two husbands). Thank you, Pam and the staff of The Corner Store, for all your hard work and making me feel so welcome. You all outdid yourselves on the refreshments, too.

To my delight, Maria Taormina, one of the contributing authors to the project, was in the area and able to attend, as well. Her story, "Pig's Tail," is one of my favorites--a touching story that makes you smile and consider the importance of faith and family.

Sunday was a whirlwind. I spoke at the morning services of the two First United Methodist Churches in the area: one in Harbor Beach and one in Port Hope. Thank you, Rev. Paula Timm, for your invitation and hospitality...and definitely your guidance to our next stop.

After a great lunch at The Pasta House with Rev. Paula, my husband Bill and I traveled to the First United Pentecostal Church in Bay City. Pastor and Sister Mike Wood welcomed us into their service. What a beautiful presence of the Lord we experienced there and a great time of fellowship afterwards. Oh, yeah, Cracker Barrel and fried okra afterwards. Yum!

You may have noticed a pattern here: talk, eat, on to the next place; talk, eat, on to the next place. Well, it's the way it happened, and it was all good. I forgot to mention that I tried frog legs for the first time. They tasted ok, but just the thought of eating those hopping critters from the pond was enough to make me skip on over to the other side of the buffet table to the BBQ ribs.

Thanks again to all who made the trip possible. I pray all who purchased "Quilting Patches of Life," "Gates & Fences: Straight Talk in a Crooked World," and "Gateway of the Sun" will be entertained, educated and encouraged as they read.

Yeah! The long awaited first shipment finally arrived. Pre-orders have been mailed, and new orders are welcome.

This historical fiction book is targeted to upper middle school/young adult readers. It's really chock-full of fascinating information and a storyline that will surprise readers as it twists and turns like a knotty pumpkin vine on a Peruvian terrace.

Shipshewana Sunshine

The sun was shining in Shipshe March 12-14. Thank you, Chris at Lolly's, for hosting a Quilting Patches of Life booksigning. You made me feel very welcome, and as always, it's a pleasure to meet new people.

And the big cheezy smile I'm wearing in the picture at right is due to the "Grandma's Fan" quilt behind me...a lovely design and also the title of Chapter 11, my own submission about my grandma. The story tells how my grandma's influence provided stability to me as a struggling youth and her acts of kindness continue to fan out through time and generations even after her passing. It's guaranteed to make you laugh and cry. I still do when I read it. And I remember the lessons Grandma imparted to me.

Several other Shipshewana stores purchased inventory of Quilting Patches of Life, and I have a strong feeling I'll be back in the area again soon. The book and its lessons are a perfect fit for the Amish/Mennonite community and those drawn there to experience simple life lessons of faith, family and friends.

What a great time in Frankenmuth at the ALJC ladies conference! Thank you, PPH, for the inviting me to share my books. And Sis. Shepherd was such a treat.

From Frankenmuth, I headed to a Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators (SCBWI) Networks Night where I met and mingled with other children's authors and illustrators. What a wonderful opportunity to connect with others working in the same genre. Which brings me to my next point . . .

Snow thinned the usual crowd at the Woodside Ladies Bible Study today, but I thoroughly enjoyed the time I shared with the women who braved the elements to be there.

New and Experienced Writers Invited to Participate In Contest

Following the lauded 2007 release of Quilting Patches of Life, Affirming Faith, a Christian organization based in Rochester Hills, Michigan, has announced its 2008 writing contest. This free contest, open to Christians of all denominations, invites beginning and experienced writers to offer personal stories for consideration in a new project. Winning entries will be included in a compilation book designed to uplift people in their faith walks.

Each entry should be 1,000-1,500 words and give a specific “life lesson” learned through a difficult circumstance, a high point in the writer’s life, or an everyday experience. Winning entries will receive a free copy of the completed work due out later this year and a certificate of award recognizing their achievement.

“We all have a story,” Affirming Faith founder Lori Wagner stated. “I can learn from your experiences and be encouraged, and I hope that I can encourage you with mine.”

I'm so excited! Yes, I say that in my blogs quite a bit, but that's because I don't usually post life's downers. I save the mulligrubs for my family . . . ha!

Downriver Christian Womens Association - January Luncheon

What can I say . . . except, that was a GREAT luncheon. The ladies were so warm and welcoming, and the food was fantastic (all homemade).

Pictured with me at right is one of the board members of the association, Carole Fairall, who scheduled me to sing and speak at the monthly gathering in Trenton, Michigan. And that's the quilt my grandma made for me also pictured. Thankfully, after treacherous, snowy drives, we all arrived safely and enjoyed the time to share and fellowship.

The subject, Quilting Patches of Life, was well received. And ladies, if you're reading this, I have your prayer requests with me. God is able!

"Fireflies, Glow Worms and Smudged Jelly Jars," the first installment, is now available at www.affirmingfaithmiab.blogspot.com. I hope you have a chance to check it out and it is a blessing to you.

2) A new Photo Gallery Page has been added to the Affirming Faith website at www.affirmingfaith.com/photogallery.html The page includes downloadable photos of my family, Affirming Faith activities and National Day of Prayer activities.

3) This afternoon Kathy Briscoe hosted a lovely advent tea. She outdid herself preparing her home and such delicious food. Thank you, Kathy for your gift of hospitality, and also for the opportunity to share Quilting Patches of Life with your guests.

4) And I can't let this post conclude without saying what a great week of interviews on Family Life Perspectives! It was such a pleasure being with Harry Broomfield, Director of Perspectives of Troy. So much positive feedback has been coming in, as well as stacks of book requests. I had to place another order with my printer this week!

. . . from who else but a mom? Quilting Quilting Patches of Life. What an idea!

Julie Arduini, one of the contributing authors featured in Quilting Patches of Life, received a lovely Thanksgiving gift from her mother. Featuring the Buzzard's Roost quilt pattern, also the title of Julie's story, her mom quilted up the wallhanging you see here. This is only one-third of it, but as you can see, it's lovely.

As the author of the project, I am thoroughly blessed by all the feedback coming in from the contributing authors and readers. I was at Red Lobster this Sunday for dinner with my family after Sunday morning service. A lady who came as a guest to the open house and purchased a book was at the restaurant. She gave me a big hug and word of thanks saying she just finished the book, that it was very good, and it came to her at a time when she really needed the encouragement.

Praise the Lord!

Thoughts on Thanksgiving

I confess, someone sent that quote to me and I snagged it to use on the blog. When I think about all that Anne Frank, a teenage girl in hiding, went through as she wrote these words, I'm amazed by her character and the way her faith shined forth like a beacon in the terrible darkness she and her family faced.

We are blessed, my friends. So very blessed!

One thing I'm thankful for from just last week was the opportunity to share the gospel message -- who Jesus is and why He came -- to a group of 25 students from Van Hoosen Middle School. The Lord was there in the public school clasroom, and as one person said, "when you were telling them about the cross, you could have heard a pin drop."

Four young people handed in cards indicating that for the first time in their lives they prayed to ask Jesus into their hearts, and several made rededications. I praise God for all He's doing and pray these young people will remain committed and grow strong in their faith.

This Thanksgiving, let's choose to be thankful, and as Anne said . . . be happy!
